=== '''1. Model Identification & Valuation''' ===

* '''Reflex (RX) vs. Non-Reflex:''' * Avoid '''Non-Reflex''' models unless they are under €100 (they are much harder to use for modern filmmaking and there are more lenses and accessories available for RX models)
** '''How to identify a Reflex model:'''
*** Look for '''two shafts''' on the side: One for "1 frame" (with a red dot) and one for "8 frames" (for the hand crank).
*** Check the '''Viewfinder''': Earlier models have a smaller 6x or 10x magnification.
*** '''Base Type:''' Determine if it has a "Flat Base" or the older rounded base.
*** '''Early Reflex Models:''' Should feature a '''Variable Shutter Lever'''. If not you have one of the first RX models in your hand. Dont pay to much!
** '''Premium Models (SB/SBM):''' These feature a larger '''13x viewfinder''' and a different '''Filter Holder''' system. Thes camera’s have a Bajonet fitting for the lens, and not a C-mount turret. The SBM has the option for a magazine
** '''Magazine option''': If you want a RX spring Bolex that can handle a 120m/400ft film magazine check if the camera has a flat top with a hatch. Its either the RX 5 (c-mount turret) or the SBM model (bajonet)

=== '''2. The Spring Motor Test (Critical)''' ===

* '''Consistent Speed:''' Wind the spring fully and let it run it on 24 fps until it stops (this should take close to 28 sec. on 24 fps or 672 frames in total). Never ever run a spring-driven Bolex at 64 fps without film loaded. The lack of resistance places excessive strain on the gear teeth when the mechanism comes to its (abrupt) stop when the spring runs out.
* '''The "Stop" Test:''' The camera should maintain its speed and then '''stop abruptly'''.
* '''Warning Sign (Slowing Down):''' If the motor slows down gradually before stopping, the spring is misaligned. This is a rather common issue with most Bolex spring-driven cameras. A CLA should solve this problem but it means your camera needs to be opened-up completely!
** ''Result:'' This causes '''overexposure''' (fading to white) and inconsistent frame rates at the end of a shot. This is a mechanical issue, not "old age."

=== '''3. Optics & Prism Inspection''' ===

* '''Prism / Glass Block:''' Open the film gate and inspect the internal glass block / prism. It has to be spotless, since you are filming through this glass block.
** Check for '''Fungi (mold), scratches, or heavy fingerprints'''.
** '''Caution:''' '''DO NOT''' touch the glass surface during inspection; use a flashlight to peer through. The coating of the glass block / prism is very sensitive for the acid of our hands / fingers and burns a permanent mark.
* '''Viewfinder Dust:''' Some dust in the viewfinder is normal and will not affect the image on the film.

=== '''4. Mechanical Integrity''' ===

* '''Turret Stability:''' The rotating lens turret should be '''flat and firm'''. It should not be "wobbly" or have any play when locked.
* '''Auditory Check:''' The camera should hum smoothly. If it sounds '''rough, grinding, or metallic''', it likely needs a CLA (Clean, Lubricate, Adjust).
* '''Speed Dial:''' Test the camera at various speeds (12, 24, 32, 48, 64 fps). You should hear a distinct change in the motor's pitch.

=== '''5. Functionality & Controls''' ===

* '''T-Mode (Time):''' Set the camera to "T". The gate/shutter should '''stay open''' as long as the trigger is pressed towards P (picture).
* '''M-Mode (disengaging the spring):''' Switch between "0" (disengage spring) and "M" (spring engaged). The lever should feel responsive and engage easily.
* '''Diopter (Eyepiece) Adjustment:''' Ensure the '''oculaire''' (eyepiece) rotates smoothly and allows you to sharpen the image for your eyesight.

In Big Room 2 we have our model C with variable gate. This particular printer is originally designed to make direct reversal prints from positive film. Filmwerkplaats bought this printer around 2003-4 through internet. It comes from a small company in Boston USA that made copies of instruction and promotion films on cars and fishing. When they went to all VHS video, the printer became redundant. The Filmwerkplaats bought this printer than for 3000 dollars and payed 1000 for crating the printer and shipment by container ship and delivering it at our place at the Achterhaven, Rotterdam. It came with the original paper tape controller and puncher + the technical manual.
Small room B shelters our B&H model C professional. This printer comes from an auction place in Atlanta, Georgia USA. Its unknown what lab it originally comes from and it had a little risk to buy this one as it wasn't know if it was in working condition or complete. With the 'professional' model sound and image can be printed in one run through separated tracks. Meaning that an image negative and optical sound negative have their own run through at once while printing to a positive print. This model doesn't has a variable gate.
This is an earlier model B&H contact printer, originally from 1953, located in small room C. It is designed for B&W printing only. It has a variable gate for composite (full), image only and sound only. It has a manual cue reader with 21 steps. Unfortunately the original lamp housing is missing the reflector mirror, so the light is not aimed to the gate. This means that the 21 steps do not in- or decrease according to an arithmetic scale. From 21-15 there is actually no light change anymore.

Unfortunately the original lamp housing is missing the reflector mirror. so the light is not aimed to the gate. This means that the 21 steps do not in- or decrease according to an arithmetic scale. From 21-15 there is actually no light change anymore.

='''B&H model C'''=
In Big Room 2 we have our model C with variable gate. This particular printer is originally designed to make direct reversal prints from positive film. Filmwerkplaats bought this printer around 2003-4 through internet. It comes from a small company in Boston USA that made copies of instruction and promotion films on cars and fishing. When they went to all VHS video, the printer became redundant. The Filmwerkplaats bought this printer then for 3000 dollars and payed 1000 for crating the printer and shipment by container ship and delivering it at our place at the Achterhaven, Rotterdam. It came with the original paper tape controller and puncher + the technical manual.
This printer operates now with a controller that is designed by James Rubery (in accordance with the original manual). This controller is to operate the 3 valves in RGB (red-green-blue light) in 0 to 50 steps each. 0 is closed and 50 is completely open.
The gate has the options
composite = full image including optical sound outline
picture = only the image, no outline framing
sound pos = only the optical sound part when printed as positive from a negative
sound rev =
